Gerard Malanga, poeta, fotógrafo, cineasta, fue una gran influencia en muchas de las pinturas y películas creadas en el estudio de Andy Warhol, conocido como The Factory. El New York Times lo llamó “el socio más importante de Warhol”. Además de haber protagonizado varias películas de Warhol, él y Andy colaboraron en los casi 500 “Screen Tests” individuales de 3 minutos, que dio como resultado una selección para un libro del mismo nombre, publicado por Kulchur Press (1967). Un miembro de la extravagancia multimedia de Warhol, “The Exploding Plastic Inevitable”, Malanga coreografió la música del Velvet Underground Live. En 1969, él y Warhol fundaron Interview. En 1985, Malanga fue nombrado por Henry J. Stern, Comisionado del Departamento de Parks & Recreation de la Ciudad de Nueva York, como el primer archivista fotográfico de esa agencia, a cargo de la colección negativa histórica de Robert Moses, que él mismo conservó y catalogó.
Autor de varios libros de poesía, el más reciente es Mythologies of the Heart (1996, Black Sparrow Press). También han aparecido dos libros de su fotografía: Good Girls (1994, Kawade / Tokyo) y Resistance to Memory (1998, Arena Editions).
En 1985, Malanga editó el primera estudio en profundidad sobre el voyeurismo en fotografía, Scopophilia: The Love of Looking. El libro que escribió con Victor Bockris, Up- Tight: The Velvet Underground Story, ha sido posteriormente publicado en Alemania, Japón, España, Italia y la República Checa.
Otras obras de Malanga incluyen dos discos compactos: 3 Weeks With My Dog con el grupo belga, 48 Cameras y Gerard Malanga Subir de los Archivos (Sub Rosa), que incluye cintas de su colección personal con las contribuciones recientes de Iggy Pop y Thurston Moore.

Gerard Malanga, poet, photographer, filmmaker, was a major influence on many of the paintings and films created in Andy Warhol’s studio, known as The Factory. The New York Times called him “Warhol’s most important associate.” Besides starring in several Warhol films, he and Andy collaborated on the nearly 500 individual 3-minute “Screen Tests,” which resulted in a selection for a book of the same name, published by Kulchur Press (1967). A member of Warhol’s multimedia extravaganza, “The Exploding Plastic Inevitable,” Malanga choreographed the music of the Velvet Underground Live. In 1969, he and Warhol founded Interview.
In 1985, Malanga was appointed by Henry J. Stern, Commissioner of NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, as that agency’s first photo archivist, in charge of the Robert Moses historic negative collection, which he single-handedly conserved and catalogued.
Author of several books of poetry, his most recent is Mythologies of the Heart (1996, Black Sparrow Press). Two books of his photography have also appeared: Good Girls (1994, Kawade/Tokyo) and Resistance to Memory (1998, Arena Editions).
In 1985, Malanga edited the first in-depth survey on voyeurism in photography, Scopophilia : The Love of Looking. The book he authored with Victor Bockris, Up-Tight : The Velvet Underground Story, has been subsequently published in translation in Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic.
Malanga’s other works include two compact discs : 3 Weeks With My Dog with the Belgian group, 48 Cameras and Gerard Malanga Up From the Archives (Sub Rosa), comprising tapes from his personal collection with recent contributions by Iggy Pop and Thurston Moore.

In Search of the Miraculous (1967)
‘In the Search of the Miraculous’ es una historia de multiples niveles realizada con técnicas extremadamente personales y con el tipo de atmósfera Poética y Introspección, que sólo un poeta podría crear. Es, de hecho, la historia de un poeta buscándose a sí mismo a través de su amor por una chica, y de la chica en busca de su padre. Aplicando las reglas de hierro de la vanguardia, la película no tiene ni principio ni fin, es una serie de estados de ánimo, es una búsqueda a la vez espiritual y concreta, es un momento en la vida de dos personas. –Donatella Manganotti
In the Search of the Miraculous is a multi-levelled story realized with extremely personal techniques and with the kind of atmosphere of Poetry and Introspection, only a poet could create. It is, in fact, the story of a poet searching himself through his love for a girl, and of the girl searching for her father. Obsequious to the iron rules of the avant-garde, the film has neither a beginning nor an ending it is a series of moods, it is a search which is at the same time spiritual and concrete, it is a moment in the life of two people. – Donatella Manganotti
En la época, In Search of the Miraculous (cuyo título italiano es Alla ricerca del Miracoloso) fue la película más ambiciosa de Gerard Malanga hasta la fecha, inspirada en parte estilísticamente después de Senso (1954), una película de Luchino Visconti. El título de la película fue inspirado por el libro del P. D. Ouspensky del mismo nombre. (“Sólo cuando nos damos cuenta de que la vida no nos lleva a ninguna parte que empieza a tener significado”). La película trata de una relación no correspondida, documentando y conservando los detalles más remotos y minuciosos de la vida y la existencia de la musa. Es metafóricamente una búsqueda de lo que “resiste a la memoria”.
La película tuvo su estreno mundial en el Festival de Cine de Bérgamo de 1967 en el mismo programa con “2 ou 3 choses que je sais d’elle” de Godard. Posteriormente, ha sido incluido en una serie de programas de poesía y cine de Malanga. Malanga reclutó a varios cineastas para que aportaran imágenes, constituyendo así una compilación cooperativa de imágenes caleidoscópicas. Los cineastas que formaron parte de esta cooperativa fueron: Warren Sonbert, Marie Menken, Mario Schifano y Andy Warhol.
[At the time, In Search of the Miraculous (whose Italian title is Alla ricerca del Miracoloso) was Gerard Malanga’s most ambitious movie to date, partly inspired stylistically after Luchino Visconti’s movie, Senso (1954). The movie title was inspired by P. D. Ouspensky’s book of the same name. (“It is only when we realize that life is taking us nowhere that it begins to have meaning.”) The film deals with an unrequited relationship, thus documenting and preserving even the most remote and minute details of the muse’s life and existence. It is metaphorically a search for what “resists memory.”
The film had its world premiere at the 1967 Bergamo Film Festival on the same programme with Godard’s Two or Three Things I Know About Her. Subsequently, it has been included in a number of Malanga’s poetry & film programmes. Malanga enlisted a number of filmmakers to contribute footage, thus constituting a cooperative compilation of kaleidoscopic visuals. The filmmakers who were part of this cooperative were: Warren Sonbert, Marie Menken, Mario Schifano and Andy Warhol.
