Mosori Monika (1970)

"Un documental expresivo sobre las mujeres en el Tercer Mundo. Este es un filme etnográfico sobre dos culturas que se han encontrado. Los misioneros franciscanos españoles llegaron a Venezuela en 1945 para ‘civilizar’ a los indios Warao, que viven en los pantanos del Delta del Orinoco. Antes de la llegada de los misioneros, los Warao vivían en relativa aislamiento y estaban poco afectados por el mundo exterior. La relación entre los indios y los misioneros es simple en la superficie, pero se manifiesta en un cambio complejo de técnicas, valores y estilos de vida que han alterado de manera indeleble la visión de la vida de los Warao. La aculturación se presenta desde dos puntos de vista. Una monja cuenta cómo vivían los indios cuando llegaron los misioneros y lo que las monjas han hecho para ‘mejorar’ las condiciones, tanto espiritual como materialmente. Una anciana Warao relata lo que siente que han sido las experiencias importantes en su vida. Los dos puntos de vista están estructurados en contrapunto, de manera que los aspectos más profundos de la yuxtaposición de la cultura moderna sobre la antigua se vuelven evidentes a través de las revelaciones de las dos mujeres." – Chick Strand

"An expressive documentary about women in the Third World. This is an ethnographic film about two cultures that have encountered one another. The Spanish Franciscan Missionaries went to Venezuela in 1945 to "civilize" the Warao Indians, who live in the swamps on the Orinoco River Delta. Before the missionaries came, the Waraos lived in relative isolation and were little affected by the outside world. The relationship between the Indians and the missionaries is simple on the surface, but it is manifested in a complex change of techniques, values and life style which have indelibly altered the Warao vision of life. The acculturation is presented from two viewpoints. A nun tells how the Indians lived when the missionaries arrived and what the nuns have done to "improve" conditions, both spiritually and materially. An old Warao Indian woman tells what she feels has been the important experiences in her life. The two viewpoints are structured in counterpoint so that the deeper aspects of the juxtaposition of the modern culture over the old becomes apparent through the revelations of the two women."

Mujer De Milfuegos (1976)

Una especie de película de fantasía herética. Un retrato expresionista y surrealista de una mujer latinoamericana. No es tanto un retrato personal como una evocación de la conciencia de las mujeres en zonas rurales de países como España, Grecia y México; mujeres que visten de negro desde los 15 años y pasan toda su vida dando a luz, preparando comida y atendiendo responsabilidades domésticas y agrícolas. Mujer De Milfuegos describe en términos poéticos, casi abstractos, sus tareas diarias repetitivas como una forma de ritual obsesivo. La película utiliza acción dramática para expresar los pensamientos y sentimientos de una mujer que vive dentro de esta cultura. A medida que se transforma, su aislamiento y deseo, transmitidos a través de actividades simbólicas, le otorgan una cualidad universal. A través de experiencias de éxtasis y locura, se nos muestran diferentes aspectos de la personalidad humana. El secuencia final presenta su conciencia de otro nivel de conocimiento.

A kind of heretic fantasy film. An expressionistic, surrealistic portrait of a Latin American woman. Not a personal portrait so much as an evocation of the consciousness of women in rural parts of such countries as Spain, Greece and Mexico; women who wear black from the age 15 and spend their entire lives giving birth, preparing food and tending to household and farm responsibilities. Mujer De Milfuegos depicts in poetic, almost abstract terms, their daily repetitive tasks as a form of obsessive ritual. The film uses dramatic action to express the thoughts and feelings of a woman living within this culture. As she becomes transformed, her isolation and desire, conveyed in symbolic activities, endows her with a universal quality. Through experiences of ecstasy and madness we are shown different aspects of the human personality. The final sequence presents her awareness of another level of knowledge.

Fake Fruit Factory (1986)

"En el pueblo donde paso mi tiempo en México, tenía un amigo estadounidense, un hombre que era pintor. Se casó con una mujer mexicana y tuvo tres hijos con ella… Durante años intentó pensar en esquemas que le permitieran ganar dinero para no tener que ser un yo-yo [yendo de un lado a otro entre México y EE.UU.]… Comenzó a hacer frutas y verduras de papel maché para vender en tiendas de turistas locales. Se volvieron muy populares, y antes de que pudiera pensarlo dos veces, toda la operación creció hasta el punto de que tuvo que alquilar una fábrica y contratar a personas para hacer piezas sin pintar en sus hogares. Bueno, después de unos tres años comenzó a enriquecerse... pero se aburrió de todo el asunto. Esta es una película sobre las mujeres que trabajaron para él." – Chick Strand

"In the town where I spend my time in Mexico, I had an American friend, a man who was a painter. He married a Mexican woman and had three children with her…..For years he tried to think of schemes which would make him money so he wouldn’t have to be a yo-yo [going back and forth between Mexico and the U.S.]… He started making papier mache fruit and vegetables to sell to local tourist stores. They became very popular, and before he could think twice, the whole operation grew to the extent that he had to rent a factory and hire people to make unpainted pieces in their homes. Well, after about three years he started getting rich... but he got bored with the whole thing. This is a film about the women who worked for him." – Chick Strand
