No Wave Cinema

The  Blank Generation (1976) es la primera de las películas de punk rock DIY de bajo presupuesto estrenadas en la escena No Wave de Nueva York a mediados de la década de 1970. Inspirada en Jean-Luc Godard, fue filmada por Amos Poe, cineasta de la No Wave, e Ivan Kral, miembro del Patti Smith Group.

The Blank Generation (1976) is the earliest of the released low-budget DIY punk rock films from the No Wave scene in New York City in the mid-1970s. Inspired by Jean-Luc Godard, it was filmed by No wave cinema filmmaker Amos Poe and Patti Smith Group member Ivan Kral.

The film includes footage of Blondie, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, New York Dolls, The Heartbreakers, The Shirts, and Robert Gordon (then with Tuff Darts).

Directors and producers Kral and Poe filmed behind-the-scenes and on and offstage footage of punk musicians before they became icons. The project stemmed from Kral's visual diary of his experiences in New York, filming bandmates and friends with a 16mm camera.

The action is centered on the music scene in New York clubs including CBGB and Max's Kansas City. Film locations also include the Hotel Chelsea, The Bottom Line, and other spots in the Bowery and Lower East Side neighborhoods. Legal disputes between Poe and Kral ultimately resulted in the removal of Poe's name from the credits once Kral asserted copyright to the film years after its initial release.

‘The Blank Generation” is a 1976 clip compilation of punk’s birth in New York. Shot by insider Ivan Kral (ex-guitarist of Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, and Blondie) and edited with underground filmmaker Amos Poe, this rare gem is packed with legendary rebels in their humble beginnings. This DIY time capsule was filmed by one of punk’s very own for his personal home movies. It reads like a bunch of friends onstage--because that's truly what it was.

Though Kral’s pawnshop camera didn’t record audio, Poe scored band’s demo tapes to create this un-synched 16mm labor of love, which is now considered an important record of the origins of the punk and art scene in New York City.

 Blank City (2009)

Blank City es un documental estadounidense de 2010, dirigido por Celine Yanier, acerca de la escena punk rock a finales de los años 1970 en el centro de la ciudad de Nueva York, donde se vivió una oleada de cine independiente do ityourself conocida como el movimiento No Wave Cinema.

La directora, Danhier, comentó en una entrevista: «Si googleas "No Wave filmmakers" no obtienes muchos resultados. En Wikipedia tiene solo un par de párrafos. Es una locura, porque fue el comienzo del movimiento del cine independiente. Esos cineastas eran genios y crearon algunas de las películas más osadas de su generación, así que yo tenía que hacer algo al respecto y mostrar esas películas».
