The Decline of Western Civilization es un documental estadounidense de 1981 dirigido por Penelope Spheeris, filmado entre 1979 y 1980. El filme aborda la escena punk rock de Los Ángeles y recibió una controversia notable cuando, en 1981, el Jefe de Policía del LAPD, Daryl Gates, escribió una carta exigiendo que la película no se volviera a mostrar en la ciudad.

El título del filme puede ser una referencia a la reseña de dos partes de Lester Bangs sobre el álbum Fun House de los Stooges para la revista Creem en 1970, donde Bangs cita a un amigo que dijo que la popularidad de los Stooges señalaba "el declive de la civilización occidental". Otra posibilidad es que el título se refiera a la lectura de Darby Crash del libro Der Untergang des Abendlandes (El declive de Occidente) de Oswald Spengler. En We Got the Neutron Bomb, una historia oral sobre la escena punk de Los Ángeles recopilada por Marc Spitz, Claude Bessy, conocido como Kickboy, afirma que él inventó el título.

La película es la primera de una trilogía de Spheeris que documenta escenas musicales en Los Ángeles durante el final del siglo XX. La segunda película, The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years (1988), cubre la escena del heavy metal de Los Ángeles entre 1987 y 1988. La banda sonora del filme fue lanzada en diciembre de 1980 por Slash Records en formato LP. A finales de los años 90, también fue lanzada en CD. The film is the opening act of a trilogy by Spheeris, depicting music scenes in Los Angeles during the late 20th century. The second film, The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years (1988), covers the Los Angeles heavy metal scene of 1987–1988. The third film, The Decline of Western Civilization Part III (1998), chronicles the gutter punk lifestyle of homeless teenagers in the late 1990s.

In 2016, The Decline of Western Civilization was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

The soundtrack was released in December 1980 by Slash Records on LP. In the late 1990s it was released on CD as well. Germs singer Darby Crash appears on the soundtrack album cover. He died shortly before the film was released, though the promotional images for the film and album release had been designed before his death.
