Peter Barrington Hutton (24 de agosto de 1944 - 25 de junio de 2016) fue un cineasta experimental estadounidense, conocido principalmente por sus retratos cinematográficos mudos de ciudades y paisajes de todo el mundo. También trabajó como director de fotografía profesional, sobre todo para su antiguo alumno Ken Burns, así como en la fotografía de Born in Flames, de Lizzie Borden, Committed, de Sheila McLaughlin y Lynne Tillman, diversas películas del artista Red Grooms y The Gates, de Albert Maysles.
Vida temprana y educación
Hutton nació el 24 de agosto de 1944 en Detroit, Michigan, hijo de Donald y Dorothy Hutton. Tenía una hermana gemela, Wendy, y un hermano, William.
Hutton estudió pintura en una escuela de arte de Hawai y trabajó como marino mercante para pagarse los estudios. Estudió cine en el Instituto de Arte de San Francisco, donde fue alumno de Robert Nelson. Obtuvo la licenciatura en Bellas Artes.
Carrera
En 1987, Hutton recibió el premio a la mejor fotografía por su trabajo en el largometraje de Phil Hartman No Picnic en el Festival de Cine de Sundance.

Peter Barrington Hutton (August 24, 1944 – June 25, 2016) was an American experimental filmmaker, known primarily for his silent cinematic portraits of cities and landscapes around the world. He also worked as a professional cinematographer, most notably for his former student Ken Burns, as well as cinematography for Lizzie Borden's Born in Flames, Sheila McLaughlin and Lynne Tillman's Committed, assorted films by artist Red Grooms and Albert Maysles' The Gates.
Early life and education
Hutton was born August 24, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan to Donald and Dorothy Hutton. He had a twin sister Wendy and a brother William.
Hutton studied painting at an art school in Hawaii, working as a Merchant Marine to pay his way. He studied filmmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he was a student of Robert Nelson. He earned a master's degrees in fine arts.
Career
In 1987, Hutton was awarded Best Cinematography for his work on Phil Hartman's feature film No Picnic at the Sundance Film Festival.
In 2011, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress selected Study of a River as one of 25 films annually chosen. He taught filmmaking at CalArts, Hampshire College, Harvard University, SUNY Purchase, and Bard College, where he served as the director of the Film and Electronic Arts Program since 1989.[citation needed]
Much of Hutton's career was influenced by his time in the merchant marines.
Hutton's films are distributed by Canyon Cinema in San Francisco and Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst in Berlin. In May 2008 the Museum of Modern Art in New York held a full retrospective of Hutton's films. His most recent work, Three Landscapes, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013.
Hutton died of cancer at the age of 71 on June 25, 2016. Director Kelly Reichardt dedicated her 2019 film First Cow to him, paying homage through a long static shot of a barge moving down the Columbia River.

En los últimos treinta años, Peter Hutton ha producido más de veinte películas, retratos cinematográficos mudos de ciudades y paisajes de todo el mundo. También ha trabajado como director de fotografía profesional. Hutton estudió pintura, escultura y cine en el Instituto de Arte de San Francisco. Ha enseñado cine en el Hampshire College, la Universidad de Harvard, SUNY Purchase y actualmente es Presidente del Bard College Film And Electronic Arts Program, donde enseña desde 1984.
La obra de Hutton se ha expuesto en importantes museos y festivales de Estados Unidos y Europa. Ha recibido becas del Fondo Nacional de las Artes, el DAAD de Berlín, la Fundación Rockefeller, el Premio de la Crítica Cinematográfica Holandesa y la John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, entre otras muchas. In the past thirty years, Peter Hutton has produced over twenty films - silent cinematic portraits of cities and landscapes from around the world. He has also worked as a professional cinematographer. Hutton studied painting, sculpture and film at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has taught filmmaking at Hampshire College, Harvard University, SUNY Purchase and is currently Chairman of The Bard College Film And Electronic Arts Program where he has taught since 1984.
Hutton's work has been shown in major museums and festivals in the U.S .and Europe. He is the recipient of grants from National Endowment of the Arts, DAAD Berlin, Rockefeller Foundation, Dutch Film Critics Prize, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, among many others. Three Landscapes (2013)
Un retrato apenas soñado en las fábricas de acero de Detroit, donde Hutton nació; las sombras de las balas de heno proyectadas sobre las praderas del río Hudson, donde vive; y, al fin, tras los pasos de Robert Gardner, la línea del horizonte hallada en Etiopía, en un desierto que se derrite, alucinación previa a la muerte evocada a lo largo de este tríptico donde las nubes se mueven más rápido que los trabajadores, como descubrimos en una feliz superposición.

TWO RIVERS es un poético retrato comparativo de los ríos Hudson y Yangtsé que habla del auge de China en relación con el declive de una región postindustrial estadounidense. (Bard Graduate Center) TRES PAISAJES se centra en el terreno industrial que rodea Detroit (donde creció Hutton), los bucólicos pastos del valle del río Hudson (donde vivió) y las salinas etíopes (donde viajó bajo el patrocinio de Robert Gardner). El vínculo más obvio entre los tres es el trabajo, pero la película funciona menos como una declaración de tesis que como una meditación poética, un intento a modo de haiku de destilar el paisaje utilizando unas pocas formas gráficas parcas y resonantes. La secuencia de Detroit es la que más llama la atención de inmediato, con su tenue paleta de colores y sus precisos cálculos gráficos de hierba, nubes, cielo, humo y arquitectura industrial, que conducen a una dramática cadena de imágenes de dos hombres que avanzan por una alta escalera: una visión de la calma meditativa en la lucha. TWO RIVERS is a poetic, comparative portrait of the Hudson River and Yangtze River that speaks to the rise of China in relation to the decline of a post-industrial American region. (Bard Graduate Center) THREE LANDSCAPES zeroes in on the industrial terrain ringing Detroit (where Hutton grew up), the bucolic pastures of the Hudson River Valley (where he lived), and Ethiopian salt flats (where he travelled under Robert Gardner’s sponsorship). The most obvious link between the three is labour, but the film functions less as a thesis statement than a poetic meditation, a haiku-like attempt to distill the landscape using a few sparing, echoing graphic forms. The Detroit sequence is the most immediately arresting, its subdued colour palette and precise graphic calculations of grass, clouds, sky, smoke, and industrial architecture leading to a dramatic chain of images of two men inching across a high ladder – a vision of meditative calm in struggle.
