MADAME X - EINE ABSOLUTE HERRSCHERIN

Lo inquietante de la película es que las mujeres sucumben voluntariamente a la fascinación de los rituales de poder y, en la imaginación de los hombres, abandonan el territorio de la inocencia y la presunción de la superioridad moral de las mujeres, rechazando la amabilidad de otras películas de mujeres que, como la última de Agnès Varda, promeen "amor sin preocupaciones". Esta película no tiene rastro de miedo. Al contrario: asusta a quienes se defienden con firmeza contra la fascinación de este poder ritualizado y totalmente estetizado.

En el buque Orlando, tripulado por mujeres, las banderas de ataque, cuero, armas, amor lésbico y muerte se izan con una belleza que no quiere dominar por completo la mirada del espectador. What makes the film disturbing is that women willingly succumb to the fascination of rituals of power and - in men's imagination - abandon the territory of innocence and the presumption of women's moral superiority, rejecting the gentleness of other women's films, which, like Agnès Varda's last work, promise 'love without cares'. This film shows not a trace of fearfulness. On the contrary, it is calculated to evoke fear in those who put up resistance against the fascination of this ritualized and totally aestheticized power.

On the women's ship Orlando the flags of attack, leather, weapons, lesbian love and death are raised with a beauty which dispenses with a total domination of the viewer's gaze. The aesthetic is strictly stylized, exhibiting itself without overwhelming us. --Karsten Witte, Die Zeit
